What All These Sports Have in Common — And What All of Them Lack

Basketball. Baseball. Cheer. Cross Country. Field Hockey. Football. Golf. Gymnastics. Ice Hockey. Lacrosse. Softball. Soccer. Swim. Tennis. Track. Volleyball. Water Polo. Wrestling.

These 18 sports are vastly different in physical requirements, rules, training regimens, and game-day strategies. But every one of them shares one crucial similarity: the pursuit of competitive excellence and human development.

And they all lack one thing.

Let me explain.

The Common Coaching Playbook

Across every sport and every level, you'll find these shared staples of a program:

  • Preseason goals setting
  • Practice plans and physical conditioning routines
  • Scouting reports and film review
  • In-game strategy and performance breakdown
  • And, of course, the classic post-game coach speech: *"We gave it our all," "We didn’t execute," or "We need to play with more heart."

While these components are deeply embedded in our coaching culture, they largely overlook the most determining factor in long-term team success: the mental makeup of the athlete.

Where We Fall Short

Consider the post-game environment. Win or lose, the coach gathers the team and delivers an emotional summary. Sometimes it lands; sometimes it doesn't. Rarely does it lead to structured reflection or measurable improvement.

Nowhere in the common routine is there a systematic post-game review tool that measures:

  • Confidence
  • Composure
  • Attitude
  • Leadership
  • Competitiveness
  • Coachability
  • Focus on team vs. self
  • Understanding of strengths and areas for improvement

And almost never is this self-assessed by the athlete, nor aligned with clearly defined standards, expectations, priorities, and objectives (S.E.P.O.) set by the athletic department or coaching staff.

This isn't just an anecdotal issue. According to the NCAA's most recent GOALS Study, over 55% of student-athletes report feeling mentally unprepared for the pressures of college athletics. Simultaneously, a 2023 NFHS report shows that 67% of high school Athletic Directors cite "developing athlete character and culture" as a top challenge. But only 23% say they have a framework in place to actually measure it.

The Result: An Incomplete Performance Picture

When we only measure physical stats—points scored, races won, errors made, or minutes played—we ignore the core of performance: the mind. A basketball player may shoot 2 for 12, but did she stay confident? A wrestler might lose a match, but did he demonstrate resilience, discipline, and team-first mentality?

Coaches and Athletic Directors are left guessing. Culture, chemistry, and character become buzzwords instead of strategic levers. Without data, there's no system.

What If?

What if Athletic Directors had an Athletic Relationship Management (ARM) system that allowed them to:

  • Connect with every athlete and coach in their organization
  • Discover mindset traits, motivations, and mental trends across teams
  • Engage the full ecosystem: athletes, coaches, officials, fans, parents, and partners

What if every coach required a post-game Mindset Performance Indicator (MPI) review, and every athlete submitted a reflection tied to their team’s S.E.P.O. framework?

This isn’t fantasy. This is myPerforma.

Measuring What Matters

myPerforma introduces a simple yet transformative system:

  • Mindset Performance Indicators (MPIs): Post-game self-assessments completed by athletes and reviewed by coaches.
  • Ratings Scale (1-7): Confidence, composure, focus, leadership, effort, etc.
  • Character Attributes: Resilience, honesty, discipline, accountability.
  • Behavior Attributes: Communication, coachability, teamwork, initiative.
  • Hindsight Notes: A space to reflect on what went well, what didn’t, and how to improve—like Google Reviews for athletic performance.

The result is a scalable transcript and mindset resume that spans across all 18 sports, creating an internal record of each athlete’s mental evolution and character growth.

Your Athletic Department. Elevated.

With myPerforma’s Athletic Management System (AMS), Athletic Directors can:

  • Track mindset development over time
  • Evaluate coaches beyond wins and losses
  • Identify cultural red flags before they erupt
  • Recruit and retain aligned staff and athletes
  • Streamline compliance and communication
  • Support NIL readiness with athlete portfolios

This is how you decode the heart of your program.

It starts with one small change: Post-game MPIs.
